At last some good news!

Treatment is often reasonably simple and inexpensive. The aim is to thin your blood to prevent or minimise further problems. Your doctor will prescribe the correct blood thinning medication. The internationally accepted treatment for this condition is simple Aspirin (Ecotrin) or Warfarin (Comudin) these drugs are incredibly effective in controlling the condition, allowing the patient to lead a relatively normal life. The decision to use one or the other, or both, will be decided by your specialist. Heparin (in injection form only) is an alternative to Warfarin and is used when conditions dictate. More information is given on this matter in our link sites. Treatment research is ongoing and recent knowledge is improving the lives of those with some persistent problems e.g. some people have found that their fatigue problems are greatly improved with the use of a drug called Chloroquin Ph (Plaquenil) This inexpensive drug, was previously prescribed as an anti-malarial treatment, research proved it successful in treating other problems associated with auto immune disorders. This drug to date is (for some unknown reason) not available in South Africa. It is a section 21 drug and your pharmacist should be able to get you the forms to complete to obtain the drug. There are alternatives available in this country. Please ask your doctor for more information or contact the foundation for more advice.
